Applied Serendipity: July 27

A look at how I’ve used Applied Serendipity in my own life lately:

CARE: I love teaching at The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon. It’s the only school that combines technology and public policy - what could be more pressing today? As an Adjunct Professor in the Chief Data and Analytics Officer Program, I’ve taught and coached ~150 students - most are already data leaders across industry. Our 4th cohort just wrapped in June, and #TeamSagraves won the Practicum Cup for the best Enterprise Data Management Strategy. This cup will soon arrive in Buffalo while we still await the Lombardi Trophy and Stanley Cup. So proud of my team and all of the graduates of the Carnegie Mellon Chief Data and Analytics Officer Program. Congratulations!

PREPARE: An important pillar of Applied Serendipity is the idea of preparing and doing the work. As Louis Pasteur famously said, “chance favors the prepared mind.” This past year I’ve been writing and speaking about data, technology and leadership, and have met and cultivated many new relationships. So when I had the opportunity to write an article on data leadership in the age of AI for Harvard Business Review - with a very tight deadline - I was prepared and had already done much of the work. It’s been rewarding to see feedback on this piece as it’s been shared on social media around the world.

SHARE: This week we pulled the honey boxes from the hives to begin our summer harvest. Sign up here to be notified with the honey is bottled and available!

AWARE: I’ve always loved racquet sports, and we put up the badminton net for the summer and play after dinner. I love the movement, coordination, competition and social aspect. It turns out badminton is good for longevity!

DARE: I am really excited about an opportunity coming up later in August - this requires a new level of daring! Stay tuned…
