Applied Serendipity: Feb. 20

CARE: I learned a Japanese word this week, “konenki,” which represents renewal, regeneration and the next stage of a woman’s life. It’s a beautiful and growth-oriented word, a contrast to the word menopause we use in our culture. Coincidentally, the Wall Street Journal had an article about fashion brands catering to women over 50. As my long-time friend and I discussed today, the world right now could use a little more “Mom energy.” We’ve got a lot to say and do in this next stage—watch out as we step into our full power!

PREPARE: Hosting a dinner for Chief Data Officers in early April in Washington, DC with Rajesh Anandan, founder of Ultranauts and long-time data colleague and leader extraordinaire Cara Dailey. Hoped to stay in DC for a few extra days, but flights to Buffalo are selling out as people head to Buffalo for the eclipse!

AWARE: If you’re observing Lent, or are spiritually-curious, Kate Bowler’s Lent Devotional provides resources with spiritual honesty, what Kate calls “Have a Beautiful, Terrible Lent.”

SHARE: I bought a new pair of large gold teardrop earrings in Vegas last month—the first fine jewelry I’ve bought myself since I left my corporate job. The second time I wore them, I noticed after I arrived for dinner in Brooklyn from my hotel in Manhattan that one of my ears was missing an earring. I panicked, checked all over inside the restaurant and out, called my Lyft driver to see if it fell off in the car (it didn’t), and in desperation called my hotel. The doorman at the hotel had found it in the street and returned it to the front desk! It was stepped on and banged up a bit and can’t be fixed—but it was miraculous that it was found. So now the dents are part of the story—and I proudly wear these banged up earrings as a symbol of the bumps and bruises we all experience in life.

DARE: I met with some brilliant interns at 1486 Labs in Pittsburgh—they’re helping to build a data community to make it easy to use and apply third party data for competitive advantage. Very impressive and committed team!
